Note: I strongly suggest that you back up all the data on your phone before doing this. Remember, you’re doing this at your own risk (don’t say I didn’t warn you)!

Method 1

To fix this, I had to delete the BBM application, and reinstall it.

Originally, I wasn’t able to delete the BBM application, because it was a “core” application, so I installed the latest version from BlackBerry App World hoping it would overwrite it as an “add-on” application.

After installation, I rebooted the BlackBerry, and deleted the application from the “Applications” menu under “Options” (the wrench). Again, I rebooted the phone.

I found that my calendar was still defaulting to BBM Groups – despite BBM being uninstalled. If you don’t have this problem, then awesome, reinstall BBM at this point. If you do, then go to “Options” –> “Advanced Options” –> “Default Services” and choose your account, and press the back button, saving your preferences. At this point I found that my calendar now defaults back to the proper account – not to BBM groups. I then reinstalled BBM, and everything was fine, and my group memberships automatically came back.

If it really matters, this was done on a BlackBerry Bold 9000 running OS 5.

Method 2

Now, I haven’t actually tried this method, so I can’t verify that this works – but this is what RIM’s support group on Twitter (@BlackberryHelp) suggested I do.

“To fix this issue you will need to create a backup and perform a security wipe and do not restore BBM groups: http://bit.ly/di72gD ^CB”

Before we begin: These instructions will only work on the most recent phones/OS’s. The latest Blackberry OS (v. 5.0.0.411)was leaked out on the internet, but any of the new phones (Bold 9700, etc. will work as well). So, let’s begin:

Assuming you’ve installed the new O/S already, or you have one of their newer phones (I think most of the new ones with the trackpad instead of the trackball should be fine..haven’t tested any other than the Bold 9700 though.

Start by going to “Manage Connections” and select “Set Up Wi-Fi Network” then choose “Manually Add Network” (you can also scan, does prettymuch the same thing).

If manually adding, the network name would be CAMPUS-AIR

On the next screen, set the different values as follows:

• Security Type: PEAP
• Username: <your student number>
• Password: <your network password>
• CA Certificate: <choose any certificate, you’ll be ignoring it anyways>
• Inner link security EAP-MS-CHAP v2
• Token: <none>
• Disable Server Certificate Validation: CHECKED

Now you can save the connection, or if you don’t want to save, just click connect.

That should be it..

Apple's Magic Mouse

If you haven’t tried Apple’s Magic Mouse yet, you should. It’s not radically different from an old-school mouse, but it’s really cool. The multi-touch features are pretty cool too..but like I said, it’s still a mouse. For more information on the mouse, go to Apple’s Magic Mouse page. It’s a pretty decent mouse; especially considering its Bluetooth, and multi-touch and only costs $69.00 from the Apple Store.

Here’s the catch. It only works on Mac’s. There’s no drivers for the Magic Mouse on Windows. Until now…(well..it’s still not 100% legit, but hey, if it’s good, then who cares, right?)

But Dan at UNEASYsilence has posted both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the latest Windows drivers for the Magic Mouse, which Apple delivered via an update for Apple’s Bootcamp. You can find his blog post which has the drivers at http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2009/11/14588/.

We decided that we’re better off on our own. After following a post on Lifehacker.com, we were able to make our own DTV antenna for around $6. We had coat hangers, and some wood that we found in the garage. We went out and bought wood screws, washers, and a 75 – 300 ohm matching transformer, which we picked up at The Source for around five bucks.

We put it together using these instructions, and plugged it in, and to our surprise, it works marvelously!

Compare the quality for yourself between regular cable, and DTV (thanks Brad and Ben for the pics):

We plan on building a second antenna, just like the first, to combine it with the first to make a DB8 antenna. I’ll post up results when we get around to making that.
